Tens of thousands of Grey parrots could soon be saved.
An end to the trade in wild-caught African Grey parrots has come one step closer. Gabon, together with several other African States, the European Union and the USA, has submitted a proposal to transfer Grey and Timneh parrots to Appendix 1.
If passed this will prohibit all international trade in wild Greys saving tens of thousands of wild birds each year.
Recent data suggest that wild populations have collapsed in some areas and trappers are traveling to ever more remote sites to supply the international trade.
The proposal will be voted on at the CITES Conference of Parties to be held in Johannesburg South Africa later this year. WPT will be there to support the process and ensure the voices of parrots are heard.
